Journal kept at various times between 1718 and 1769 containing notes on astronomy and navigation, computations and observations at various places in New York and New Jersey, "memoranda preparatory to the transit of Venus, Baskenridge, June 1769," and a journal kept while running the division line between the provinces of New York and New Jersey, June-Aug., 1719 (29 p.). Also notes by his son, William Alexander on the transit of Venus, 1769 (p. 95-103). There are some illustrations and maps.

James Alexander was a lawyer in New Jersey and New York during the eighteenth century. Born in Scotland in 1691, Alexander fought in the Rebellion of 1715, which resulted in the exile of the Stuarts from England. That year, he moved to the United States and became the surveyor general of the Province of New Jersey.
